Reframing the Billing Reminder: The Low-Hanging Fruit of Retention

The billing reminder has one of the highest open rates you will ever get. Here is how to stop it from inviting cancellations.

If I were to perform a very quick win to decrease subscription churn for a CPG client, one of the first things I would do is optimize their billing reminder.

Why this email is a massive opportunity

The billing reminder is a single email sent a few days before the next subscription renewal date. Its purpose is to let the customer know that their next order is about to ship, which is a legal requirement in most countries.

This email is a premium piece of real estate. It has an extremely high open rate, yet most brands invest almost 0 effort into optimizing it.

How you frame this message has a drastic impact on how people perceive their subscription with your brand.

❌ The mistake most brands make

Most brands use a generic subject line and headline like: "Your card will be charged in X days".

This is a huge mistake. By leading with the charge, you are literally inviting people to cancel their subscription. You are reminding them of the cost rather than the value they are about to receive.

✅ What to do instead: The "Freebie" Reframe

Many brands already include freebies or samples in subscription orders, but they fail to communicate them effectively.

Just because a freebie is set up to be sent doesn’t mean the customer is aware of it.

Instead of the generic "card will be charged" notice, reframe the message to: “Your next freebie is arriving in X days”.

Simply reframing the notification this way changes the customer's psychology from "I am paying for this" to "I am receiving this".

We’ve seen up to 11% lower subscription churn with this approach, which is a massive win for long-term LTV.

Bonus: Protecting Trust while Driving AOV

Billing reminders protect trust by giving subscribers advance notice and control over their upcoming charge.

This transparency prevents the "surprise" chargebacks and refund requests that plague poorly managed subscription brands.

But beyond protection, this is one of the most effective moments to present subscription upsells.

At this stage, customers are already mentally preparing for their delivery, making it a natural, low-friction moment to suggest add-ons or product pairings.

When you pair a clear reminder of benefits with a one-click option to add to the upcoming order, you aren't just reducing churn; you are actively increasing AOV.
